回娘家 Lyrics and English Translation
This song 回娘家 is often heard during Chinese New Year. In the song, the woman sings about going back to her mother’s rural home as it is customary to visit the parents during the Chinese lunar new year. She grew up in the house with the chickens and ducks till 17 or 18 years old when she got married and moved away. Carrying her baby with her, she walks to her mother’s home which is quite far away, at the bottom of the hill. She recalls every time the mother sees her grandchild, she would laugh with joy. The trip is tiring and finally when she reaches the house, she worries that her mother and grandma is not at home.

回娘家 – 卓依婷 ( by Timi Zhuo):
回娘家 (Going Back Mother's House)
Carrying my baby on my back, I'm going to visit Mother today
Mother's house is quite far, at the bottom of the hill
She raise chicken and ducks, and also raised me, too
Raised me till I was 18 when I got married)
After a year or so, I gave birth to a precious baby
Oh and my baby looks just like my hubby
With long eyelashes, big round eyes, and a small rose bud mouth!
Grandmother always laugh with joy whenever she sees my baby
Going home to Mother's with my baby on my back
With no car, no donkey or horse to pull my cart)
I have no choice but to walk and walk till my legs are numb
But oh, what if I got to Mother's house and grandmother is not at home?
