我和你 (I and You) – Teresa Teng with English Translation

Jack3b1

This song is sung to the tune of 榕樹下 (rong su xia), a love song known to be sung by Yu Tian (余天). However, I prefer Teresa Teng's version as the song sounds more tender and the lyrics are more romantic. In the lyrics, the woman expresses her appreciation for the man's love and the wonderful time they spent together.

Song: You and I (我和你) sung by Teresa Teng (鄧麗君) in 1979:

Lyrics:

English translation:
I and You (我和你)

I thank you from the bottom of my heart
For your care and affection
If not for you
Giving me the comfort of love
I would have lost the meaning of life

We drift in enchantment in the spring winds
We whisper without end through the midsummer nights
We listen to the autumn bugs
While they softly whisper continuously
We greet the snowflakes drifting to the ground
My life through the years is uneventful
But once I have you
My life is filled with vitality

I thank you from the bottom of my heart
You make me forget my worries and gloom
If not for you
Giving me encouragement and courage
I would have lost the meaning of life

We drift in enchantment in the spring winds
We whisper without end through the midsummer nights
We listen to the autumn bugs
While they softly whisper continuously
We greet the snowflowers drifting to the ground
My life through the years is uneventful
But once I have you
My life is filled with vitality.

This song was originally sung by Japanese singer Masao Sen (千昌夫) in 1977.
Japanese title of the song is Springtime in the North (北国の春) (Kita Guni no Haru).
Teresa Teng also sang the Japanese version of this song. Below is a short clip from a rehearsal she did in 1985:

This is the Japanese version of her song:

There is a interesting short clip of Teresa Teng singing this song  live to a gathering of audience outside the Mandarin hotel in Singapore sometime in 1985. At the beginning of the song, comically, she suddenly but sweetly urged the audience to applaud. There was a brief camera diversion to a bus stop at Orchard Road which was not necessary.

At the end of the song, she spoke in Japanese as the event at that time was beamed live to Japan. Translated into English, she was saying: "Thank you very much. Teresa has sent you the song from Singapore."
One is captivated by her sweet and charming face. She was very cool and natural and always so sweet and lovely. Unfortunately, the embedding for this video is disabled. The link is here:
