望春風 Hokkien Lyrics and English Translation

望春風 (Nini)望春風 means "Longing for the Spring Breeze". It is a Taiwanese Hokkien song composed by Teng Yu-hsien (鄧雨賢), a Hakka Taiwanese musician, and written by Lee Lin-chiu. It was released by the Columbia Records in 1933, and originally sung by some female singers at that time, such as Sun-Sun (純純). The later version by Teresa Teng is perhaps the best known version.

Another well known Taiwanese Hokkien song 雨夜花 (Rainy Night Flower) sung by Teresa Teng was also composed by Teng Yu-hsien.

Lyrics
望春風

獨夜無伴守燈下,清/春/冷風對面吹;
十七八歲未出嫁,拄/搪/想/看著少年家;
果然標致面肉白,誰/啥/(啥人)家人子弟?
想欲問伊驚歹勢,心內彈琵琶。

想欲郎君做翁婿,意愛在心內;
等待何時君來採,青春花當開;
聽見外面有人來,開門來/共看覓;
月娘笑阮戇大呆,予風騙毋知

English translation/ English lyrics
Longing for the Spring Breeze (望春風)

On a lonely night, alone by myself, under a dim lamp,
I feel the spring breeze blowing on my cheeks
17 going on 18, and still unmarried
I encounter a young man
He has a handsome face and a fair complexion
I wonder which family he is from
I want to ask him but feel shy
My heart is beating like a strummed pipa

My heart is wishing to have him as my husband
His love is already inside my heart
I wonder when he would come to pick me up
To gather up the blooming flowers of youth
I hear footsteps coming to the door
I open the door to see if he is outside
But the moon is laughing at me for being a fool
I realised I have been deceived by the sound of the wind.
