Lover’s Tears

情人的眼泪Lover's Tears (情人的眼泪) as sung by Sandy Lam (Hong Kong Singer).
Compared to other singers who usually sang this song in lower pitch, like the original version by Poon Sow Keng, Sandy Lam sang this song in a much higher pitch and I must say she sang it very well. The voice is somewhat eerily sad, but yet seductive, and her facial expression reflect the mood and lyrics of the song – her sad, alluring eyes longing for a love that has gone missing. However, the music accompaniment may seem a bit loud and too upbeat for a sad song.

Lyrics with English translation
Words: Die-yi Chen / Music: Yao Min

Why am I shedding tears for you?
Don't you know it is for love?
Only for my lover, my tears are precious
Each teardrop is for love, all for love

Why am I shedding tears for you?
Don't you know it is for love?
If not for my lover going to leave me
My tears would not be falling, and falling

Spring has returned, spring flowers are blooming
How can you say farewell
I am in my room, waiting anxiously for you
Do not forget that my love is deep, deep as the ocean

Why am I shedding tears for you?
Don't you know it is for love?
If not for my lover going to leave me
My tears would not be falling, and falling

The song Lover's Tears was originally sung by Poon Sow Keng (潘 秀 琼) in 1958. Originally from Macau, Poon migrated to Malaysia and eventually became a Singapore citizen. In the recording of the song, Poon actually shed tears. But according to her, her tears were not brought about by the sadness of the song. Rather, it was due to singing a difficult song. In her words:

“Whenever a mistake is made, we will have to start from the top. It’s much easier now, just press a button and we can
rewind and start over. It took me two days to get the song right. It was such a difficult song! The key was either very high or very low at parts. When the song was almost done, the key for the last line ‘my tears would fall’ (掉下来) just wouldn’t fall low enough.”

“Technically then, we were not able to manipulate the sound. I just couldn’t get it right. I was upset and started crying. Mr Yao Min was shocked. I asked to try again the next day. He agreed and consoled me. The next day when I got to the studio, he had changed the key, lifting it half a key higher. The recording then went ahead without a hitch. So I did shed tears, but not for a lover. Rather, it was for the difficult song.”
